Bereavement spread for Nan

  1. Hi Cherly - blimey, you like your vivid bright colours on your blog, don't you?!

Anyway, my thoughts on your reading.

God knows we all have skeletons in our closets, and as the saying goes: ‘We can choose our friends but we can’t choose our family’.

I’m not surprised the King of Swords came up for you. That sounds the only type of environment you knew with her.

How can you accept it? In the RWS system, this 10 of Swords is known as the ‘Pick yourself up, dust yourself down and start all over again’ card. It means exactly that. Your life is going on, so live it!

The Ace of Cups and Death, I agree with you about, you can make changes there if you want to.

As for the Queen of Swords – yes she appears cold and hard, but do you know there’s another side to her? She has a wicked sense of humour and she’s a good all rounder. She can master practically anything she turns her hand to, and seeing as you’re a teacher, I would say so could you as well. I think this queen, along with the 10 will really help you turn yourself around. So stop beating yourself up about something you really had very little control over.

  2. Such a powerful reading! I have a few thoughts to add, but they're just intended as supplements to your own, so please ignore what I say if it doesn't ring true for you.

The King of Swords, speaking to what you should know about your sorrow/guilt, is a pointer to explore the situation with a clear, logical mind. And that's exactly what you've done here in explaining how the lifelong relationship with your grandmother arose, how it got perpetuated, why you feel bad about it now, etc.

10 of Swords is an amazing card for advice on how to accept your guilt. Basically it says, you feel the pain, and you move on from here. Yes, it hurts, & there's no way around that. You've accepted your share of responsibility, & you're in this 10 of Swords space right now. However, an important part of its message is that this is as bad as it's going to get. From here you will be able to move on, and recover.

Ace of Cups as the hidden gift, and Death as wisdom: Don't hold back your love, because death is waiting to claim us all. Open your heart, so you don't ever face the same regret of having failed to try to connect with the people in your life.

How can you transform your sorrow/guilt? The Queen of Swords is a woman who has experienced grief... and she's stronger for it. I think her message here echoes that of the King -- don't get swallowed up by your emotions; don't beat yourself up; see clearly how the situation with your grandmother came about, and if you don't want to repeat it with other relatives, take the steps necessary to change your relationship with them. If & where appropriate, that is -- this queen would keep a clear head and forge her relationships wisely.

Overall it's a deep and compassionate reading, and it sounds like it resonates with your own natural wisdom.

(I hope you don't mind if I credit this spread to its creator: it's a version of Sorrow's Alchemy by James Ricklef.)

  4. Thanks guys. What you all say adds to and complements my reading. It is good to have my eyes openend the positive side of the Queen of Swords. Your comments also help me to balance out my reaction, clarifying that there is no need to veer from aloof to emotioanlly open - finding a comfortable middle ground in my own area of flex is fine.

  5. What synchronicity!
I am working through Mary K Greer's "Tarot for Yourself" and have been discovering the cards which are astrologically and numerologically relvant to me. In the light of this reading and my reaction to it, guess what came up as my
"Mode of expression in this world" card?
    Yes, the Queen of Swords.
Now this IS something to think about, and I'm glad that firefrost and pangolin have given me some positives about this card.
Oh, and lest I forget, my "Inner Teacher" is the King of Swords!

I need to meditate on these cards, I think.

  6. I am simply amazed at the cards that you have been drawing, not only now, but during the past week. But that's how the tarot seems to work. You seem to be on a good road for coming to terms with your feelings.
